Fred Wilpon, born on November 22, 1936, is an American real estate developer and former baseball executive. He held the role of principal owner of the New York Mets from 1987 to 2020. Wilpon hails from a Jewish family and was raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. His father, Nathan Wilpon, managed a funeral home.
Fred Wilpon attended Lafayette High School in Brooklyn and harboured a strong passion for baseball, even pitching during his freshman year in college until an injury halted his playing career.
In 1958, he earned his B.A. degree from the University of Michigan. After college, he briefly worked in calculator sales, while his wife worked as a secretary for Branch Rickey, the former president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, whom Fred knew from their neighborhood.
In 1972, Wilpon co-founded Sterling Equities, a commercial real estate development company, with his brother-in-law, Saul Katz. Their venture found success with the development of townhouses in Tarrytown, a suburb in Westchester County. Seeking tax advantages, they invested in real estate across the country, which turned out to be a wise move as they unknowingly purchased properties at the market’s bottom. Wilpon continues to serve as the company’s chairman.
In 1980, Wilpon initially acquired a one-percent stake in the Mets when Charles Shipman Payson sold the team, with Doubleday & Co. holding the remaining interest. Over time, he increased his ownership stake to five per cent. In 1986, a significant development occurred when Doubleday & Co. was sold to Bertelsmann AG, and Wilpon, having a right of first refusal, threatened to exercise it.
Ultimately, Doubleday and Wilpon agreed to purchase the Mets for $81 million, with each holding a 50 per cent stake. In 2002, the Wilpon family acquired the remaining 50 per cent from Doubleday for $391 million, giving Fred Wilpon sole ownership of the Mets. He served as the team’s president from 1980 to 2002, CEO from 1980 to 2020 and chairman of the board from 2002 to 2020.
In September 2020, a significant deal was reached for billionaire hedge fund manager, Steve Cohen, to purchase 95 per cent of the Mets from Wilpon, his son, Jeff Wilpon (Chief Operating Officer); and co-owner Saul Katz for approximately $2.4 billion. This deal was approved by MLB’s owners on October 30, 2020.
