Wilson inherited her father’s musical talents and co-founded Wilson Phillips with her younger sister, Wendy, and childhood friend, Chynna Phillips, when they were teenagers. The group released two albums, Wilson Phillips and Shadows and Light, which sold a combined total of 12 million copies. Wilson Phillips also charted three No. 1 singles and six top 20 hits in the United States before disbanding in 1993.

In addition, Wilson continued to make music with her sister as the duo released the Christmas album – Hey Santa! – in 1993. They also joined their father to record the 1997 album, The Wilsons. Wilson sang “Our Time Has Come” with James Ingram for the 1997 animated film, Cats Don’t Dance.

In 2003, Wilson went solo with the album – For the First Time. The album’s lead single, “I Don’t Need You To”, a remake of the Olivia DiNucci-penned Samantha Mumba ballad “Don’t Need You To (Tell Me I’m Pretty)”, failed to gain any interest and the album was subsequently shelved. In 2004, Wilson regrouped with Wendy and Chynna and released their third album, California, which appeared on Sony Music’s record label. The album featured cover songs, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, highlighting the glory days of  The Mamas & the Papas and the Beach Boys.

Shortly after the birth of her daughter in 2006, Wilson released an album of lullabies, A Mother’s Gift: Lullabies from the Heart. In October 2007, she released her second solo effort, a Christmas album, titled: Christmas with Carnie, featuring a song written by her husband, “Warm Lovin’ Christmastime”.

Apart from music, Wilson was also involved in television. Between 1995 and 1996, she hosted her own short-lived syndicated television talk show, Carnie! She later guest-starred on episodes of That 70s Show (2001), Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the fourth season of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club (2006).

Wilson was a correspondent on Entertainment Tonight and, in 2006, hosted a special on E!, titled: 101 Celebrity Slimdowns. She was also a cast member of the CMT series, Gone Country, in January 2008; and the VH1 series, Celebracadabra and Outsider’s Inn. Wilson hosted GSN’s new edition of The Newlywed Game and starred in Carnie Wilson: Unstapled in 2010.
