The Honda Beat is a small and sporty car that first hit the streets in 1991. It is not your typical car, it is what they call a “kei car” in Japan, which means it is compact and designed to be efficient for city driving.

The original Honda Beat, made from 1991 to 1996, was a tiny two-seater convertible with a cool twist— it had its engine right in the middle of the car. This mid-engine setup made it nimble and fun to drive. Under the hood, you would find a small but peppy 656 cc three-cylinder engine.

Fast forward to 2020, Honda introduced a different kind of Beat— this time, it is not a car but a scooter. This modern Honda Beat is designed for zipping through city streets with ease. It is perfect for everyday commuting, thanks to its small size, fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability.

In 1991, Honda launched the Honda Beat, a unique small car, as part of Japan’s “Kei” car category. These cars enjoyed tax benefits and relaxed regulations, and the Honda Beat stood out for its sporty design and driving fun.

Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda, approved the Honda Beat shortly before his passing in 1991. The company produced about 33,600 of these cars, with most built in the first year. Pininfarina initially designed the car and then sold the plan to Honda.

The car had a cool mid-engine layout and a compact steel frame with a short 2280mm wheelbase. This made it agile and easy to handle. The suspension system ensured a smooth ride, and the brakes were efficient, especially in the top variant with ABS. The car, weighing only 760kg, had a balanced weight distribution.

Under the hood was a small yet powerful 656cc three-cylinder engine. Unlike some other small cars using turbocharging, Honda stuck to a free-revving engine, reaching 96 bhp per litre. The Beat’s five-speed manual gearbox provided a lively driving experience, especially in the top variant with a limited-slip differential.

Designed with the help of Pininfarina, the Honda Beat had a distinctive look, with short overhangs and a convertible top. Inside, the zebra-patterned seats and basic yet comfortable features, including air conditioning and power windows, provided a pleasant driving environment.

There were two main versions of the Beat – labelled PP1-100 and PP1-110 – and a couple of special editions. The first model had mostly cosmetic changes, while the second one had some mechanical differences. All cars came with a driver-side airbag, and they were exclusively sold in Japan through Honda Primo dealerships.

In true Honda style, the Beat’s engine did not use a turbocharger or supercharger. The 656 cc engine had a special MTREC (Multi Throttle Responsive Engine Control) system, giving 64 PS (63 bhp) at 8,100 rpm and a top speed of 135 km/h (84 mph). It only had a 5-speed manual transmission.

Competitors for the Honda Beat in the ’90s’ included the Suzuki Cappuccino and Mazda’s Autozam AZ-1. In 2010, a parade with 569 Honda Beats set a Guinness World Record for the largest Honda car parade.

The Honda Beat remains a classic in the automotive world, known for its unique design and being the last car approved by Honda’s founder.

Powering the Honda Beat scooter is a consistent 110cc single-cylinder engine across all variants, delivering a reliable 8 horsepower and 9 Newton meters of torque. The automatic transmission ensures ease of operation, making it an ideal choice for riders seeking a hassle-free and efficient urban commuting experience.
