  • Founder, Chairman, CEO, and Chief Technology Officer of SpaceX.
  • Angel investor, CEO, product architect, and former chairman of Tesla, Inc.
  • Owner, Chairman, and Chief Technology Officer of X Corp.
  • Founder of the Boring Company.
  • Co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI.
  • President of the Musk Foundation.
  • Owner of X (formerly known as Twitter).

As of October 2023, Elon Musk is the wealthiest individual globally. His wealth is primarily attributed to his ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX.

In 2022, he acquired Twitter for $44 billion and later merged the company into the newly created X Corp., rebranding the service as X in 2023. Also in 2023, he founded xAI, an artificial intelligence company.

Musk’s public statements and actions have made him a polarising figure. He has faced criticism for making unscientific and misleading statements, including spreading COVID-19 misinformation and promoting conspiracy theories.

Also, his ownership of  X (formerly Twitter) has been controversial, marked by layoffs, an increase in hate speech on the platform, and changes to the platform’s verification system.

Justine Musk and Elon Musk

Justine Musk crossed paths with her future spouse, Elon Musk, during their time as students at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada.

In a 2010 essay published in Marie Claire, Justine recollected their initial encounter during her first year at university.

“A fellow student, one year ahead of me, he was a well-groomed, upper-class young man with a South African accent who approached me one afternoon as I was ascending the steps to my dorm. He claimed we’d met at a party I was certain I hadn’t attended. (Years later, he confessed that he had spotted me from across the common room and decided he wanted to meet me.), she wrote.”

Initially, she declined Elon Musk’s invitation when he asked her out. Elon Musk eventually transferred to the University of Pennsylvania after two years and graduated in 1995, but their relationship did not immediately take off. Justine initially turned him down.

“He invited me for ice cream. I agreed, but then stood him up with a note on my dorm-room door,” she recounted in her essay. “Several hours later, while I was studying my Spanish text in a stuffy room in the student centre, I heard a polite cough behind me. Elon was there, smiling awkwardly, with two melting chocolate-chip ice cream cones in his hands. He’s not the type to accept ‘no’ for an answer.”

Elon Musk persisted in his pursuit, even sending Justine roses after he had transferred to the University of Pennsylvania. During one of his visits back to Canada, she eventually agreed to have dinner with him.

However, after graduation, their paths diverged. Justine earned a degree in English literature and went to Japan to teach English as a second language (ESL). She returned to Canada after a year and began bartending and working on her novel.

As she recounted in Marie Claire, Justine told her sister that if Elon Musk reached out to her again, she would reconsider their relationship. The tech entrepreneur called her a week later and they reconnected. Justine then moved to California to be with her lover.

Two years after tying the knot, Justine and Elon Musk welcomed their first child, Nevada Alexander, in 2002. Shortly after his birth, he succumbed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

“Nevada went down for a nap, placed on his back as always, and stopped breathing,” she wrote in her Marie Claire essay. “By the time the paramedics resuscitated him, he had been deprived of oxygen for so long that he was brain-dead.”

“He spent three days on life support in a hospital in Orange County before we made the decision to take him off it. I held him in my arms when he died,” she continued.

In November 2022, Elon Musk tweeted about their son’s death in response to inquiries about not allowing Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist Alex Jones back on Twitter. “My firstborn child died in my arms. I felt his last heartbeat,” he wrote. “I have no mercy for anyone who would use the deaths of children for gain, politics, or fame.”

However, Justine Musk refuted her ex-husband’s claim in her post a few days later, stating: “A SIDS-related incident that put him on life support. He was declared brain-dead. And not that it matters to anyone except me, because it is one of the most sacred and defining moments of my life, but I was the one who was holding him.”

In her Marie Claire essay, Justine revealed her desire to cope with the loss of her son by trying to get pregnant again soon after. “I buried my feelings… dealing with Nevada’s death by making my first visit to an IVF clinic less than two months later. Elon and I planned to get pregnant again as swiftly as possible. Within the next five years, I gave birth to twins, then triplets,” she wrote.

She shares five children with Elon.

After what Justine Musk described as a “wake-up call” car accident, she came to the realisation that a change was needed in her relationship. While Elon Musk initially agreed to undergo counselling, this attempt at reconciliation was short-lived.

“Just one month and three sessions later, he issued an ultimatum: Either we mend this marriage today or I’ll file for divorce tomorrow, which I understood as, ‘Our current situation suits me, and it should suit you too.’

“He filed for divorce the following morning. I felt numb, yet strangely relieved,” she revealed in her essay.

In a 2010 op-ed for Business Insider, titled: “Correcting The Record About My Divorce,” the SpaceX founder explained how he was co-parenting with his ex-wife two years after their separation:

“Custody of our five children is split evenly. Almost all of my non-work waking hours are spent with my [children], and they are the love of my life,” Elon Musk wrote.

Following Elon and Justine Musk’s separation, something “unexpected” occurred, according to Justine in her Marie Claire essay.

“Throughout the divorce proceedings, his fiancée (actress Talulah Riley) and I found that we liked each other,” she wrote. “She is, by all accounts, a lovely, bright and very young person, better suited to my ex-husband’s lifestyle and personality than I ever was.”

In her essay, Justine Musk expressed that despite being “estranged” from Elon Musk, she does not regret their marriage or their divorce.

“I’ve worked through some anger, both at Elon for making me feel so disposable, and at myself for buying into a fairy tale when I should have known better,” she wrote.
