Splatoon is a third-person shooter video game franchise created by Hisashi Nogami and Shintaro Sato. It is developed and owned by Nintendo. The game revolves around terrestrial cephalopods known as Inklings and Octolings, which can transform between humanoid and cephalopod forms at will. They frequently engage in turf wars with each other using assorted types of weapons.

Her full name is Marina Ida, while her Japanese name is Iida Marine (イイダ・マリネ). Marina is a member of the Off the Hook band, alongside Pearl (Japanese name Hōzuki Hime, ホウズキ・ヒメ). The duo perform a variety of songs which is utilised as in-game music. Developers also use the characters to convey content updates and announcements to players of Splatoon 2.

Marina Splatoon is an Octoling who appears to be taller than most Inklings and Octolings. She has dark brown skin and teal eyes with reddish-pink pupils in the shape of an infinity symbol (like octopuses in real life). She also has two eyelashes and dark brown tentacles with teal tips that can also change completely to one colour.

Marina Splatoon wears a sleeveless, high-collared black top that bares her midriff, showing a teal navel piercing. In addition, there is an undone silver zipper with an infinity symbol-shaped hole resembling the pupils of her eyes and black puffy shorts with a diagonal waistline. Marina wears slanted grooves that light up in sync with the music. Underneath the grooves are teal tights and black boots with big undone silver zippers with 8-shaped holes like the one on her top. She also wears a pair of teal headphones on her head.

In Octo Expansion, Marina Splatoon is known as DJ Hyperfresh and she wears hip-hop outfits that resemble Tupac Shakur. She also wears a white bandana with light grey tentacle designs wrapped around her head and a long, silver chain necklace with an infinity-symbol pendant. In addition, she wears a black wristwatch, a black chain bracelet on her right arm, a white turtleneck crop top, aqua-coloured capris, and silver slip-on shoes with a bow on top and white soles.

In Splatoon 3, Marina Splatoon’s outfit consists of an orange/blue-coloured pantsuit with the coat open revealing her sports bra, black gloves and black-blue high heels. Her headphones are different, with teal rings on the sides of them.

Marina Splatoon, who is voiced by Alice Peralta, is described as more reserved than her bandmate, Pearl. In Japan, Marina speaks in Katakana, though she does not completely speak the language like DJ Octavio. In the Splatune 2 liner notes, her lyrics are entirely in katakana to showcase her skills in singing in a different language.

She is also soft-spoken and appears timid. However, she can get sassy as a response to any teasing. Marina Splatoon is very technologically skilled, with Pearl describing her as being “too smart for her good” in the Octo Expansion. One of her notable weaknesses is her forgetfulness as she has been seen to forget the news she and Pearl are broadcasting. Marina is also said to have a crush on Pearl, though it is not explicitly stated in the game.

Marina Splatoon was born into what she later described as “the oppression of Octarian society”.  She was trained as an 83rd-generation combat engineer from a very early age and graduated from elementary training at the age of nine after skipping multiple grades. In the events of Splatoon, Marina received multiple commendations as part of DJ Octavio’s wasabi supply unit. She became a well-known, high-ranking member of the Octarian society, recognised by Agent 8, despite never meeting face-to-face.

In Splatoon, Marina first appeared in Octoling gear in the audience of Agent 3’s battle against DJ Octavio. However, she left the army after hearing the Squid Sisters sing the Calamari Inkantation. Escaping to Mount Nantai, Marina meets an Inkling named Pearl Houzuki, who is practising how to sing. They become friends and Pearl teaches Marina Splatoon the Inkling language and culture.

Marina shows Pearl her musical abilities through her demo of Ebb & Flow. Together, they form a band named “Off the Hook”. “Ebb & Flow” is their first single, which became a hit. By Splatoon 2, “Off the Hook” has become famous in Inkopolis Square.

Although Pearl is shocked by the discovery, the bandmates remain friends.

Marina also used her super technological skills to prevent Commander Tartar from destroying Inkopolis. With Agent 8’s help, they detonate her prototype hyperbombs to cover the NILS Statue in ink, while Pearl uses her Princess Cannon to finish it off.

In Splatoon 3, Marina returns with Pearl to provide vocals for the band Damp Socks. They perform songs like  Candy-Coated Rocks and Tentacle to the Metal. She also plays piano for the band, according to  Sunken Scroll 22.

Marina Splatoon is set to return in the DLC story mode Side Order with Pearl in 2024. However, her role in the story remains unknown.
