Michelle Alozie is a household name in the Nigerian football scene due to her impressive performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand. Michelle Chinwendu Alozie was born on April 28, 1997, in Apple Valley, situated in the U.S. state of California, to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Nigeria. She was also raised there and attended the Granite Hills High School. Alozie attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology.

Alozie began a football career at Yale University, where she played for the Yale Bulldogs. However, she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament that ended her senior season. After graduating from Yale, she transferred to the University of Tennessee, where she played for the Tennessee Volunteers.

In 2019, Alozie registered for the  National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) college draft but was not selected. However, luck shone on her in January 2020 when she signed a contract with BIIK Kazygurt, the defending champions of the Kazakhstani women’s football championship. She trained and played with the first team until the COVID-19 pandemic set in.

After returning to California, Alozie joined Houston Dash as a pre-season trialist without a contract in 2021. This was the club that her childhood friend Ally Prisock, was playing. Alozie was recruited by Dash assistant, Twila Kilgore, who was previously the head coach of  Pepperdine Waves. She first signed a national team replacement contract during the 2021 Houston Dash season and later, a full contract for the remainder of the season in August 2021. In December 2022, Alozie extended her contract with the club for two years.

Meanwhile, the American-born football player made her senior debut for Nigeria on June 10, 2021. She came on as a 65th-minute substitute in a 0–1 friendly loss to Jamaica. She was named in the Nigerian squad by Randy Waldrum, who was the former Houston Dash head coach. On June 16, 2023, Alozie was named in the 23-player Nigerian squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup by Waldrum.

She made her World Cup debut on July 21, 2023, in Nigeria’s goalless draw against Olympic champions, Canada. She also played a key role in the Super Falcons’ 3-2 win against tournament hosts, Australia. Alozie played every minute of Nigeria’s loss to England in the knockout stages. Nigeria lost via penalties in the keenly contested match after a 0-0 draw.

In addition to playing football, Alozie works part-time as a cancer research technician at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.
