Godejohn’s life is not characterised by a conventional career path but rather by his involvement in a highly publicised criminal case. He gained notoriety due to his role in the murder of Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

Godejohn’s “career”, if it can be called that, is marked by the criminal act he committed in collaboration with his then-girlfriend, Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The murder occurred in June 2015 and it was revealed that Godejohn had travelled from Wisconsin to Missouri to carry out the crime at the behest of Blanchard, who sought to escape her abusive and controlling mother. The case drew significant media attention, portraying the intricacies of the relationships involved and the motivations behind the tragic event.

While there have barely been any detailed records of Bodejohn’s work history, the Wisconsin native already had a criminal record before meeting Blanchard. In 2013, Godejohn faced legal trouble when he pleaded “no contest” to disorderly conduct. Authorities arrested him for allegedly engaging in inappropriate behaviour, including viewing pornography on his laptop and touching himself at a McDonald’s. At that time, Godejohn was residing with his family in Big Bend, Wisconsin.

What happened to Nicholas Godejohn?

After the crime was committed, law enforcement swung into action, apprehended the suspect and took him into custody to face the charges for his crimes. In court, Godejohn faced serious charges for his role in the crime. The court listened to how he and his partner, Blanchard, planned and carried out the murder of the latter’s mother, Dee Dee. Blanchard explained that she came up with the idea and convinced Godejohn to do it.

Godejohn killed Dee Dee Blanchard by stabbing her to death. On the night of the murder in June 2015, Godejohn entered the Blanchard residence in Missouri while Dee Dee Blanchard was asleep. Her daughter, who was in the house at the time, did not intervene in stopping the crime. Godejohn proceeded to stab Dee Dee Blanchard to death in her sleep.

The court decided that Godejohn was guilty of first-degree murder. They also found him guilty of armed criminal action. This meant he used a weapon to commit the crime, a serious offence.

Nicholas Godejohn in prison

During his sentencing in February 2019, Godejohn talked about why he did what he did. He said he felt deeply in love with Blanchard and believed that killing his lover’s mother was the only way they could be together. The court, however, did not see it that way.

As a result, Godejohn received a life sentence in prison without the chance of parole. Also, he got an additional 25 years for the armed criminal action. It means he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Nicholas Godejohn family

There is not much information available about Godejohn’s family. However, The Act, a series on Hulu, provides a glimpse into the family background of Godejohn, shedding light on his parents.

In real life, Godejohn lived with his mother, Stephanie Goldammer, and his stepfather, Charles Goldammer. Notably, according to real police and media interviews, neither of Godejohn’s parents had any prior knowledge of the plan to murder Dee Dee Blanchard.

Godejohn and Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s relationship unfolded in a complex and tumultuous manner, marked by the intertwining of love, manipulation and tragedy. Their connection began in 2012 when Blanchard and Godejohn first met on a Christian dating site.

The couple communicated online for two years before meeting in person, with Blanchard and Godejohn envisioning a future together. They exchanged text messages detailing their plans for marriage and a family, reflecting a seemingly idyllic romance. Godejohn, who referred to the relationship as “the best days of my life”, believed they were soulmates.

Behind this facade of romance, a darker undercurrent emerged. Blanchard, a victim of Munchausen by proxy, endured years of physical and emotional abuse orchestrated by her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Godejohn’s role in this tragic narrative escalated when, in June 2015, he travelled from Wisconsin to Missouri to carry out the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard at Gypsy Blanchard’s request.

On the night of the murder, Blanchard and Dee Dee engaged in mundane activities, painting their nails and Blanchard put her mother to bed, promising to be a “good girl”. Godejohn entered the residence and Blanchard, hiding in a bathroom, witnessed him fatally stabbing her mother. Blanchard later admitted that she did nothing to prevent the crime.

Following her connection to her mother’s death, Blanchard faced legal consequences. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for her role in planning and orchestrating the murder of her mother, Dee Dee. In July 2016, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Blanchard served her sentence and was released on parole on December 28, 2023. As a condition of her parole, she is not allowed to have any contact with Godejohn, the man who carried out the murder. Blanchard has since shared her experiences and perspectives in various interviews and documentaries.

Blanchard eventually engaged to another man, named Ken, in April 2019. Despite the engagement being briefly called off, Blanchard eventually married Ryan Scott Anderson in June 2022.

As of the latest reports, Godejohn, the convicted murderer in the Blanchard case, has been making headlines with a peculiar letter he wrote, referring to himself as “Mr. Smiley“. In this letter, sent from the Potosi Correctional Centre in Missouri to the New York Post, Godejohn expressed a desire for people to know that he is patiently awaiting his “true time to speak” and emphasised that he is not lost amid the ongoing events. Godejohn refused to mention Blanchard by name in this communication.

This was Godejohn’s first public statement since Blanchard was released on parole from jail in December 2023. In the letter, Godejohn appeared polite and childlike, incorporating smiley faces multiple times. Despite the public attention on Blanchard’s newfound fame and relationships, Godejohn maintained his silence about his thoughts on these developments, suggesting that he will address these questions in a future interview when the time is right.

Godejohn is currently serving a life sentence at the Potosi Correctional Centre, with additional years for armed criminal action. He attempted to challenge his previous conviction in 2022 but was denied. As of now, Godejohn’s status remains confined within the prison system.
