Robin Tunney (born June 19, 1972) is an American actress. Tunney and her siblings, Patrick and Susan, were raised in Chicago by their mother, Cathy, who was a bartender, and father Patrick, who was a car salesman. Patrick was originally from Ireland, as well as Cathy’s parents. One of Tunney’s cousins is American politician and entrepreneur, Thomas M. Tunney.

During her teenage years, she had a passion for basketball but had to stop playing the sport due to a serious knee injury that required reconstructive surgery. Tunney became interested in acting while attending a local high school in Chicago and appeared in several school and theatre plays as a teenager.

She matriculated in 1990 and then enrolled at the Chicago Academy for the Arts. It was in the following year that she made her debut TV series appearance, playing “Brooke” in the episode “But He Loves Me” of the adventure comedy, CBS Schoolbreak Special. Tunney graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in drama in 1994.

Tunney is an avid poker player and, in June 2006, took part in Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown. She made it to the final table and finished second, with Jason Alexander taking the top spot. As a result, Tunney won $200,000, which she donated to The Children’s Health Fund. In August of the same year, she also competed in the World Series of Poker.

Tunney also holds Irish citizenship. One of her close friends is American composer and actress, Liz Phair. The magazine “Maxim” ranked Tunney at #81 on their 2001 list of the ‘Hot 100’. Tunney’s favourite actress is Scarlett Johansson and some of her preferred movies include The Avengers, Under the Skin and Black Widow.”

The year 1991 also saw Tunney portray “Mary” in the episode “Corky’s Travels” of the drama, Life Goes On. In 1993, she featured in four TV series, including Cutters, Dream On, and J. F. K.: Reckless Youth. Tunney had another role in the 1990s, playing “Jill Templeton” in the 1994 episode “Mayhem” of the crime mystery series, Law & Order.

In 2005 and 2006, she assumed the character of “Veronica Donovan” in 23 episodes of the crime action series, Prison Break.

From 2008 through 2015, Tunney played the role of Teresa Lisbon in the crime mystery series “The Mentalist,” created by Bruno Heller and co-starring Simon Baker and Tim Kang. It revolves around a psychic who admits to being a fraud and now assists the police in catching a man who murdered his wife and daughter. The series received four awards out of its 20 nominations.

Tunney’s three most recent TV series roles include appearing in the 2018 episode “Miss Bareback Buckaroo” of the thriller comedy series “Insatiable,” starring in 10 episodes of the 2019 crime mystery “The Fix,” and featuring in four episodes of the 2023 drama series “Dear Edward.”


Tunney’s debut film role was portraying Sandra Turner in the 1992 crime mystery Perry Mason: The Case of the Reckless Romeo. Some of her subsequent roles included the 1992 comedy, Encino Man, the 1993 fantasy comedy Frogs! and the 1995 musical comedy, Empire Records. In 1998, she took on one of the main characters, “Kitty”, in the action crime comedy, Montana.

The first half of the 2000s witnessed Tunney’s appearances in the 2001 comedy, Intimate Affairs; the 2002 mystery comedy, Cherish; and the 2004 thriller, Shadow of Fear. In 2008, she played the role of “Laura” in The Burning Plain,

Tunney appeared in a couple of films in the 2010s, including the 2012 romantic drama, See Girl Run; the 2015 biographical sports drama, My All-American; and the 2018 mystery thriller, Looking Glass.

Her most recent film role involved playing Agatha Kaine in the 2020 mystery thriller “Horse Girl,” written and directed by Jeff Baena and featuring Alison Brie, Molly Shannon, and Goldenite. The story follows a socially awkward woman, Sarah, who begins to blur the lines between her lucid dreams and waking life. The film earned one award from its two nominations.

Tunney received special thanks for both the 2000 drama movie “Bread and Roses” and the 2009 short film “The Mentalist: Evidence of a Hit Series.”

She performed the song “Fever” in the 2002 movie “The Secret Lives of Dentists” and the song “Kansas City” in the 2013 episode “Red, White and Blue” of the series “The Mentalist.” She has made appearances on talk shows such as “The Marilyn Denis Show,” “Last Call with Carson Daly,” and “Red Carpet Report.”
