AEW was inspired by a comment that renowned American journalist, Dave Meltzer, made in 2017. A fan had asked the Wrestling Observer Newsletter journalist on Twitter if another American pro wrestling promotion company, Ring of Honor (ROH) could sell 10,000 tickets and Meltzer responded: “Not any time soon.”
Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks, ROH wrestlers, challenged the statement by holding an event called “All In” in September 2018, featuring stars from ROH, Indies and other big free agents. The show sold out more than 11,000 tickets within 30 minutes of going live and led to the promotion of AEW. Rhodes and The Young Bucks also served as the Co-executive Vice Presidents of the company. AEW has grown to become a top rival for Vince McMahon’s WWE, the world’s largest professional wrestling company.
Khan has also worked with other promotions such as Impact Wrestling, RevPro Wrestling, and New Japan Pro Wrestling. These companies continue organising mutual pay-per-view (PPV) matches such as Forbidden Door. On March 2, 2022, he announced that he had bought ROH which he currently operates alongside AEW.
In addition, Khan is the owner and chairman of TruMedia Networks, a Boston-based engineering firm that specialises in analytics for the athletic sports industry.
